The Tetley’s 2023 exhibitions programme

5 Dec 2022

We’re excited to reveal The Tetley’s 2023 exhibitions line up!

2023 marks our tenth anniversary, and this programme continues our ambitious vision and commitment to supporting artists early in their careers with their first major exhibitions.

Bringing together international artists and artists local to Leeds and the north, the exhibitions feature installation, textiles, drawing, moving image work and more.

Take a look at what we’ve got planned below.

Andrew Black: On Clogger Lane
20 January – 14 May 2023

On Clogger Lane is a new experimental documentary by Andrew Black.

The film meanders through a Yorkshire valley, overshadowed by a monstrous satellite surveillance station, haunted by accusations of witchcraft and populated by the traces of many generations of past inhabitants.

Andrew Black is the recipient of the Margaret Tait Award 2020, a LUX Scotland commission delivered in partnership with Glasgow Film, supported by The National Lottery through Creative Scotland.

Samra Mayanja: The Living and the Stale
10 February – 4 June 2023

Samra Mayanja presents The Living and the Stale, her first solo institutional exhibition.

Exploring the idea of lostness, Mayanja presents a new body of work in the form of a novella, installations, drawings, a score and moving image work.

The exhibition brings together Mayanja’s poetry and images made whilst travelling around Uganda.

Samra Mayanja: The Living and the Stale is part of The Tetley Jerwood Commissions programme, supported by Jerwood Arts’ Development Programme Fund

Antibodies
Live Art Performance marathon: 18–19 March 2023
Exhibition: 26 May – 17 September 2023

The Tetley and HH Art Spaces, Goa present Antibodies, a collaborative Live Art programme that celebrates performance art and migration.

Following a week-long residency in Goa, seven artists from the UK and South Asia will create a 24 hour performance marathon, hosted in Goa and livestreamed on The Tetley’s digital channels.

The programme will conclude with an exhibition at The Tetley of expanded drawing practices, celebrating the remnants and residues of the residency and performances developed and shared in Goa.

Supported by British Council’s India/UK Together Season of Culture, within its Science, arts and heritage in times of change programme

Afra Eisma
23 June – 22 October 2023

Afra Eisma presents her first solo show in the UK, with a new artwork commissioned for The Tetley’s Atrium. Working primarily with textiles and ceramics, Eisma creates playful environments for visitors to sit, feel, rest, cuddle, learn, participate with.

Eisma’s beautiful ceramics will unfold throughout the galleries and reveal intimate stories, satire, sensuality and humour to tickle the mind.

We can’t wait to welcome you to The Tetley in 2023!
