The Tetley 2023 exhibitions programme

The Tetley announces its 2023 exhibitions programme, bringing together international artists and artists local to Leeds and the north. 2023 marks The Tetley’s tenth anniversary, and this programme continues the gallery’s ambitious vision and commitment to supporting artists early in their career with their first major exhibitions.

Andrew Black: On Clogger Lane
20 January – 14 May 2023

On Clogger Lane is a new experimental documentary by Andrew Black.

The film meanders through a depopulated Yorkshire valley, exploring the infrastructures of capital on land overshadowed by a monstrous satellite surveillance station, submerged beneath reservoirs, haunted by accusations of witchcraft, and populated by the traces of many generations of past inhabitants – from prehistoric carvings to the Victorian graves of child labourers.

Incorporating conversations with farmers, antiquarians, dowsers, grandmothers, Quakers, landowners and communists alongside an improvisational score, On Clogger Lane explores the meeting points of passivity and protest, public and private, past and present, all coincident in the same patch of ancient land.

Andrew Black is the recipient of the Margaret Tait Award 2020, a LUX Scotland commission delivered in partnership with Glasgow Film, supported by The National Lottery through Creative Scotland.

Samra Mayanja: The Living and the Stale
10 February – 4 June 2023

Samra Mayanja presents The Living and the Stale, her first solo institutional exhibition.

Exploring the idea of lostness, Mayanja presents a new body of work in the form of a novella, installations, drawings, a score and moving image work.

The exhibition brings together Mayanja’s poetry and images made whilst travelling around Uganda searching; searching for bark cloth and Ham Mukasa’s archive, but also being met by her father’s history.

Mayanja’s research centres secretary-scribe, Ham Mukasa (c.1870–1956). In 1902, Mukasa wrote a text entitled Uganda’s Katikiro in England, which documented the journey of Buganda’s prime minister to England, for Edward VII’s coronation. This is one of the first travel diaries written by an African person coming to Europe.

Mayanja’s interest in Mukasa is his ability to poetically frame – for himself and the reader – that which he had never seen. The images he constructs oscillate between rolling observation, absurd (mis)translations and compelling diaristic accounts.

Audiences will be guided through galleries which are treated as the inside of a ‘dispersed film’, playing out these journeys as scattered, stuck and expanded narratives.

Samra Mayanja: The Living and the Stale is part of The Tetley Jerwood Commissions programme, supported by Jerwood Arts’ Development Programme Fund
