Schedule

10–11am Arrival

Join us from 10am for a chance to view Emily Hesse: The Witches’ Institution (W.I.) before the programme begins.

11am–12pm Introduction and talk

Following an introduction to A Gathering in the Witches’ Institution, Andrea Phillips and Emily Hesse discuss space and practice, extending from Phillips’ illustrated lecture Building a Witches’ Institution on display in Gallery 3.

12–12.30pm Workshop: Practising Temporality

Hesse guides you through An exercise in sitting with, encouraging you to re-think clay matter as non-human matter, expanding care towards dirt.

The exercises will take place on clay, so please bring spare socks and a tea towel to wipe your feet.

1–2pm Lunch break

2–3.45pm Talk: Medium Earth

In this discussion Phillips and Hesse draw links between The Witches’ Institution (W.I.) and Kodwo Eshun and Anjalika Sagar from The Otolith Group’s practice. They will delve into the political, social and ontological ways they think about Earth practices; clay, earth, rock and sentience.

The talk will be an hour, with 45 minutes of audience questions and discussion.

3.45–4.15pm Break

4.15–5.15pm Performance: Emily Hesse, HOWE, 2019

For the first time, Hesse presents HOWE, a performance and book reading that takes place in the Atrium, upon and with CLAEG as her collaborator.
