The Tetley is proud to be an Ambassador for Child-Friendly Leeds. We are an all-ages venue and welcome parents with babies and very young children, as well as teenagers and young people.
The Tetley offers a range of creative opportunities for young visitors to enjoy including ‘Tiny Tetley’ creative play sessions, weekend and holiday drop-in activity and artist-led workshops. There are also art materials, activities, trails and storybooks available for children and families to access independently in the Resource Space and Bar & Kitchen.
Family Art Workshops
Every other Saturday, 11am – 3pm
Family Art Workshops are creative activity sessions led by artists. Inspired by our programme and our building, activities include everything from making simple prints, to designing robots, book-making and creating recycled crafts.
These drop-in activities are open to all but are especially suitable for families with children aged 5 – 11. Visitors can stay for as long or as little as they like. Activities are free and no booking is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. For details, see here.
Every month, 10am- 12pm
Bring the little ones along to join in creative and messy play. FREE. Tiny Tetley workshops take place on the fourth Wednesday of each month and are led by artists with great skills with the under fives. Inspired by all things creative, activities can include anything from sensory activities to playing with lots of different types of bright colourful materials and drawing on a big scale.
Due to increasing popularity, advanced booking is now required for Tiny Tetley workshops.
There are two time slots for each session:
10:30AM – 11:30AM and 11:30AM – 12:30PM
Please email your preferred workshop date and time slot to firstname.lastname@example.org with your name and the number of children and adults in your party.
Tiny Tetley is generously supported by Wade’s Charity.
The Tetley Art Academy
The Tetley has worked with arts collective Nous Vous to create The Tetley Art Academy, a fun way of exploring The Tetley for children and families. Free copies can be picked up at different points around the building, ask a member of staff for more details.
After School Art Club
Every Tuesday in term time
The Tetley runs an After School Art Club, ‘Art Smart Superstars’, that takes place every Tuesday during school term-time. This enables a number of children from four local Primary Schools in South Leeds, St Joseph’s, New Bewerley, Hunslet Moor and Hunslet Carr, to take part in regular free creative activities at The Tetley. Each team the club undertakes a major project inspired by our programme and there are periodic displays of work created by members of the club on show at The Tetley.
The After School Art Club is generously supported by the Igen Trust.
Cockburn High School
The Tetley undertakes in-depth creative projects with GCSE arts students at Cockburn High School in South Leeds. The projects are inspired by our exhibitions and provide curriculum enhancement, increased support, exhibition opportunities and real-world experience of the creative industries for the students taking part.
The Tetley undertakes regular art workshops with children in the Kids Holiday Club at the Hunslet Club, a long established local youth and sports club. This has seen around a dozen professional artists conduct creative workshops in this community setting.
An arts programme for young people at The Tetley
The Tetley runs a free, regular arts activity programme for young people, particularly those aged 14 – 17, with the South Leeds community organisation, Health for All. Sessions are on Wednesdays between 4 – 5:30pm and free transport to and from The Tetley is included. For more details about taking part, please ring Libby Tinworth on: 0113 2725163
