A new centre for contemporary art and learning in a landmark heritage building.
Centred around creativity, innovation and experimentation, The Tetley is a place that develops future artistic talent and opens the minds of young people, whilst at the same time engages families and individuals of all ages.
The Tetley is operated and curated by Project Space Leeds (PSL), a contemporary arts and education charity founded in 2006. PSL was established to create a platform for emerging artists across the UK and further afield, allowing them to make and show work on an expansive scale, pushing their practice within a supportive environment.
From 2007-2012 Project Space Leeds was located at Whitehall Waterfront in Leeds’ west end. In this space we worked with approximately 300 artists in nearly 20 major projects and exhibitions and engaged thousands of visitors. You can see an archive of our exhibitions at Whitehall Waterfront here.
To mark our First Anniversary the film below produced by Crossland.Digital captures the journey of The Tetley and the work it has produced over its first year
Co-Founders and Directors Kerry Harker and Pippa Hale describe their journey from Project Space Leeds to The Tetley in this video.
Springboard Artist Ben Strickland filmed visitors over the course of The Tetley’s launch weekend (30 Nov – 1 Dec 2013) as a means of capturing their expectations, first impressions and hopes for The Tetley as a new centre for contemporary art and learning.
Filming just their hands, and inviting them to respond to a selection of written prompts, Ben involved visitors in a creative and conversational exercise with The Tetley. The resulting film is atmospheric and poetic, which captures the beginning of The Tetley and the thoughts and feelings of the people to whom it belongs.
Ben is a part of Springboard, a volunteer participation programme at The Tetley. We work with early career artists, supporting them to deliver participatory projects and educational activity at The Tetley as part of their professional development.
