In 2017 Leeds West Indian Carnival (LWIC) celebrates its 50th anniversary. To commemorate this historic milestone, LWIC is programming Leeds Carnival 50, a series of events and projects that will celebrate the anniversary and will attract a wide range of audiences from Leeds, Yorkshire and beyond.
LWIC has been awarded an Our Heritage grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the Leeds Carnival 50 Heritage project which will showcase the Carnival’s heritage and history and is partnering with The Tetley to realise an exhibition of archival material, including photography, film, costume, ephemera and artefacts exploring the history of LWIC. The exhibition will open in August and run until mid-October. Alongside this main exhibition, a touring version will be realised and satellite exhibitions will be held in public spaces, such as community centres, sporting events, arts venues, shopping centres and festivals.
The exhibition activity will complement Carnival Chronicles which will support volunteers to collect oral histories which will then be brought to life in performances to be staged at community venues.
LWIC and The Tetley are currently seeking a curator to work with the LWIC and other members of the Leeds Carnival 50 team to research and realise the static and touring exhibitions. Desk space and curatorial support will be provided by The Tetley.
