The Tetley

The Borrowers: Part ONE

8 OCTOBER 2015 – 31 JANUARY 2016

Dan Beesley, Jenna Coulthard, Emma Hardaker, Benn Jackson, Hannah Stacey and Karl Russell Vickers

This two-part exhibition in the Bar & Kitchen explores the broader applications of collage within varying contemporary art practices. Looking at different forms and processes of ‘collaging’, The Borrowers showcases the work of six UK and International artists working across film, sculpture, print, digital and traditional cut and paste collage techniques.

Themes of materiality, domesticity and authorship run throughout, with works created from spliced super8 slides, wallpaper prints, sculptural arrangements, surrealist paper collages, digital video assemblages and photomontage.

Beginning at The Tetley in October 2015 the project will span two venues, when The Borrowers: Part 2 opens as an expanded exhibition at Assembly House, artist-led studios and project space in Armley in December 2015.

Throughout the duration of the exhibition, a wider group of international collage artists will be invited to collaborate with interactive works, which will be exhibited at Assembly house and may also be added into the display at The Tetley. A series of workshops and events will also run alongside the expanded project.

The Borrowers highlights the relevance traditional collage processes still bear on contemporary art practices today.
